The Gothic arch evolved from the round-topped Roman arch and is the most recognizable features of gothic architecture. It reaches higher with the same width allowing more light into the interior and produces half the horizontal thrust allowing taller structures.
It is a two-centred arch that has a radius equal to the width of the opening with centres at the bottom corners. Two-centered arches with a smaller radius known as the quinto acuto "pointed fifth" or dropped arches, while arches with a larger radius are known as recto or lancet arches.
