The first use of arches in Islamic architecture were similar to those found in Roman and Byzantine architecture, but these quickly developed into the horseshoe arch. The shape allowed greater height in the arches and an opportunity for greater visual pattern and rhythm.
The horsehoe form spread throughout the Calliphate-influenced areas, particularly in Spain and North Africa, where they may be seen on the Great Mosque of Cordoba and the Great Mosque of Kairouan.
