Also known as a discharging arch, this arch is built over a lintel that takes some of the weight off the arch. The earliest example is found in the Great Pyramid in Egypt over the entrance passage to the tomb.
This arch's use is widespread. It can be found in large synagogues, mosques and churches as well as in the architecture of the Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks.
