About

The three-centred arch also known as the basket-handle arch’ or ‘anse de panier is rounded at the top. It has a wide curve that is structurally strong, thus it was used for bridge and aqueduct construction as well as for large openings. It began to appear at the beginning of the Renaissance.
The arch was popular in the Art Nouveau period (1880 - 1920) for doorways, windows and most prominently the entrances to the then new means of transport, the metro or subway.
